Edge Motion™ speaker technology, a completely new method for producing high quality audio, is the first technology that Manifold selected for its portfolio. The idea was originally conceived by Lewis Athanas, an experienced acoustics engineer and independent inventor. In 2003, Manifold partnered with Mr. Athanas, transforming his invention from a lab demonstration into compelling product-like prototypes. After validating the market opportunity and making significant technical progress, in November 2004, Manifold raised an initial round of private financing and spun out the technology as a separate company, then called Screenspeaker LLC. Manifold continued to manage Screenspeaker and serve as the technical team as it sought venture investment to grow the company and take it to the next stage. In June 2005, the company negotiated and secured Series A financing from Polaris Ventures (www.polarisventures.com), Venture Capital Fund of New England (www.vcfne.com) and a number of the original angel investors. Kevin Johnson, Manifold's founder and CEO, served as the interim CEO for Screenspeaker until February 2006 when an ongoing executive search identified Jason Carlson, an experienced industry executive with an audio background, as the new CEO. Shortly thereafter, the company was incorporated as Emo Labs, Inc. Emo Labs now has an experienced technical, sales and marketing team focused on bringing Edge Motion™ technology to market. Manifold continues to support Emo Labs on a technical consulting basis and Kevin Johnson is an active member of the Emo Lab's Board of Directors. Edge Motion™ Speaker Technology Edge Motion™ technology is a completely new technology for producing true high fidelity stereo sound, using miniature motors to drive a thin membrane. This acoustic system has very little mass, takes up virtually no room and is able to operate in close proximity to other surfaces. Importantly, the technology can work with a variety of film materials, including completely transparent plastics. Because of this, Edge Motion™ technology has particular application in products that incorporate displays, providing the ultimate integration of both audio and visual information. As display products and their enclosures become smaller and thinner, the unique characteristics of Edge Motion™ technology make it the ideal choice for audio integration.
